Dunki" Review: A Lukewarm Collaboration Between Shah Rukh Khan and Rajkumar Hirani

Share

Introduction:

In the much-anticipated collaboration between Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and acclaimed director Rajkumar Hirani, "Dunki" fails to live up to the expectations set by the duo's respective stellar careers. Released in 2023, the film marks Shah Rukh Khan's third outing of the year, following "Pathaan" and "Jawaan," and explores the theme of illegal migration with a backdrop of a fictional Punjab village.

Plot Synopsis:

"Dunki" revolves around the life of Hardyal Singh Dhillon, played by Shah Rukh Khan, a soldier who becomes the catalyst for Mannu (Taapsee Pannu), Buggu (Vikram Kochhar), and Balli (Anil Grover). The trio embarks on a perilous journey through Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, and Turkey, aiming to reach their dream destination, London, by overcoming the challenges of illegal migration.

The Disappointing Blend:

While "Dunki" attempts to tackle the serious issue of illegal migration, it falls short of creating the trademark magic associated with Rajkumar Hirani's films. The narrative begins in a fictional Punjab village, depicting the struggles of Mannu, Buggu, and Balli as they try to navigate the complexities of obtaining a UK visa through small-time agents. The problems they face, including language barriers and visa rejections, should have been fertile ground for Hirani's brand of humor and emotional storytelling, but the execution misses the mark.

Jaded Hirani:

Unlike Hirani's previous works that seamlessly blended humor with heart-wrenching moments, "Dunki" showcases a jaded version of the director. The film feels like a fusion of "Mind Your Language" and a reverse "Purab-aur-Paschim," lacking the vivacity and emotional resonance characteristic of Hirani's best creations.

Shah Rukh Khan's Struggle:

In the role of Hardyal Singh Dhillon, Shah Rukh Khan, known for his larger-than-life portrayals, appears to be working hard without significant pay-off. Unlike his charismatic characters in previous blockbusters, Khan's portrayal of a grounded, earthy hero fails to evoke the same level of engagement. Even the pivotal scene where he declares his patriotism lacks the emotional weight that one would expect.

Vicky Kaushal's Impact:

The saving grace of "Dunki" comes in the form of Vicky Kaushal, whose brief yet memorable arc stands out in the film. Kaushal's performance harks back to the earlier Rajkumar Hirani films that effortlessly blended humor and poignant moments, offering a glimmer of the director's storytelling prowess.

Conclusion:

"Dunki" emerges as a missed opportunity for the collaboration between Shah Rukh Khan and Rajkumar Hirani. The film's lackluster execution, coupled with a subdued performance from Khan, leaves audiences wanting more from this powerhouse combination. While Vicky Kaushal's contribution adds a silver lining, "Dunki" fails to capture the magic that has defined Rajkumar Hirani's illustrious career.
